RERC - Purpose
Welcome to the website of the Rural Evidence Research Centre (RERC). We were established by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to provide innovative, multi-disciplinary research to support the development of policy for the social and economic regeneration of rural England. We are now a self-funding research centre in Birkbeck College University of London.» Read more about who we are.

RERC - Our Work
Our research was delivered to Defra in different formats with varying amounts of descriptive or explanatory material, depending on how the work originated and its purpose. The work presented here therefore consists of reports of varying length or brief notes accompanied by summary data. In other instances, material may be in the form of tables of data or slide show presentations with little supporting text.

Rural _Urban Classifications, Changes and Additions April 2009
The changes to local government structure that came into effect in England on April 1 (9 new Unitary Authorities replacing 37 districts and 7 counties) mean that a corresponding change to the Urban_Rural Classification of Local Authorities was required. The government sub-group set up to implement the changes to the classification also took the opportunity to make some minor changes to the classification itself and to classify a number of higher administrative geographies. The new classification and the classification of higher level geographies can be found »here along with technical and guidance notes.
