Am I Rural?

The Am I Rural? tool enables the user to identify whether a Census Output Area, ward or local authority district is defined or classified as rural under the new definition. This is done by inserting a full, correct postcode in the 'search box' and activating 'GO'

Interactive map tool

Insert a full postcode - e.g. YO21 3TW - in the 'search' box and activate the 'GO' button. A map appears showing:

  • the Census Output Area in which that postcode is located, identified with a flag and a direct link to ONS Neighbourhood Statistics
  • an information box showing the definition/classification categories relating to the COA, ward and district in which the postcode is located.

Note: for England and Wales, 2001 Census Output Areas are based on postcodes as at Census Day. Postcodes that have changed or have been deleted since that date will not return a rural area definition.

The Tool Bar

The tool bar has the usual PAN and ZOOM facilities.

The INFO tools:

NAME: toggles district names on/off

OVERVIEW: toggles overview map on/off

The IDENTIFY button gives further detail on LADs or Census Output Areas related to the rural definition. Click, pass crosshairs over the map and click on a Census Output Area for further information.

The PAN button is an alternative map panning tool

The VILLAGES box when checked identifies small settlements by size on the map. Uncheck to remove villages.

The INFO Table Tabs

General: gives the definition/classification information on the range of areas.

Legend: gives keys for village size, COA/ward definition and district classes.

Information: gives further information on COA, including OS grid reference of the centroid
