The New Rural Definition

Taking these ideas forward, we are concerned to use the new rural definition to ‘unlock’ and demonstrate the rural ‘meaning’ that lies within a wide range of administrative and commercial data sets. We are especially keen to use the new definition to undertake the very ‘fine-grained’ analyses necessary to understanding and comparing rural settlements and the rural economy.

The new rural definition offers a more consistent and rigorous way of analysing rurality which is ‘in tune’ with many aspects of rural policy. In order to get the most out of the new rural definition, we work at all three geographic levels of analysis:

  • local authority districts,
  • Census Output Areas and wards, and
  • the 'micro-scale' of the 1ha grid underlying from which the rural definition is derived.
