Understanding Rural Places: a continuing endeavour

Although the main emphasis or perspective of the RERC has moved on to ‘rural networks’ in the second phase of our research programme, there is a continuing need to understand the nature of rural places. Aspects of this research perspective which will continue into Phase 2 include: a study of the social and economic structure of small rural towns (including market towns) linked to Defra’s PSA4 target; further work on understanding the regional and local components of disadvantage in rural areas and settlements; analyses of rural demographic and occupational change in the recent past and projected for the future.
