To work at this level which is rich in statistics relevant to Defra’s rural proofing agenda and the whole range of services for which local government is responsible meant that we first had to devise a rural-urban classification of local authorities that took into account the national (strategic) settlement pattern and not just that of rural areas.
The classification of local authorities in England incorporating major and larger urban areas and rural settlements was delivered by the RERC after close consultation with Defra and other organisations in early summer 2005. This classification is now used in a wide range of demographic, social and economic studies of rural areas by central and local government and other organisations.
