Health in Rural Areas

In the first phase research programme, the School of Health and Related Research (SCHAAR) at the University of Sheffield undertook a major systematic review of the health research literature to assess findings related to two questions:

  • is there a health impact to rural compared with urban residence?, and
  • what health interventions work for elderly residents of rural areas?

The reviews have contributed to a second phase RERC sponsored comparative study of the health of older people in contrasting types of rural settlement. It will seek answers to such questions as: what issues influence opportunities for lengthening life expectancy in rural older populations and what issues influence opportunities for promoting health lifestyles in rural areas?
