Rural Demographic Futures

This study will feed into the work of the Horizon Scanning and Futures team within Defra and its response to the HM Treasury's 'key long-term trends and challenges' under the heading ‘demographic and socio-economic change – an ageing population’. It builds on the basic migration and demographic analysis research of the first phase.

The research falls into three parts:

  • it will refine the analysis of population age structure and change across a number of 'policy geographies' including districts, counties, regions and city regions cross-classified by the rural definition/classification,
  • it will examine the population projections for areas and the likelihood of them being realized (i.e. given housing capacity etc.) and,
  • it will make an evidence based assessment of the service and infrastructure implications of the projections.

A further important element of the work will examine the age/gender implications of changing employment and occupational structures in the countryside and will attempt to assess how these will change in the future.
